Pike Lake Dam

Location and Description

Pike Lake Dam is located near the intersection of Egypt Hollow Road and Pike Lake Road in Pike County and is the center point of Pike Lake State Park. The dam is owned and operated by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and features an earthen embankment that is 530 feet long and 30 feet high.

The drainage area of the lake is 3.3 square miles and the lake has a normal pool surface area of nearly 12 acres. As a Class I high-hazard potential structure, a sudden failure of Pike Lake Dam likely would result in the structural collapse of at least one residence or one commercial or industrial business and probable loss of human life. Pike Lake Dam: Statistics (previous structure)

Prior to completion of dam risk reduction construction the dam included these characteristics.

Safety Issues

The dam is overtopped by 5.5 feet during the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) event and requires overtopping protection. The PMF is the flood event that may be expected from the most severe combination of critical meteorological and hydrologic conditions that are reasonably possible in a particular drainage area.

Risk Reduction

This rehabilitation of the dam is a risk reduction measure that will include roller compacted concrete (RCC) overtopping protection and replacement of the principal spillway system. In addition to the overtopping protection, an earthen berm will be placed along one side of the dam to limit the amount of the RCC revetment required and to preserve the tomb of an unknown Civil War soldier that is a focal point of the park.

Other improvements will include the replacement of the existing lake drain system with a new 24-inch ductile iron pipe and control tower, which will include a 24-inch sluice gate, and a newly designed stilling basin for the principal spillway. The concrete for the spillway will be architecturally stamped and stained to mimic the existing stone walls of the outlet spillway.

Long Term Plan

Routine inspections and maintenance of the dam will continue. An emergency action plan will be revised and shared with local emergency management officials once it is completed.
