Buckeye Lake: Crest Work to Begin

Posted on 9/12/2017 by Engineering in Buckeye Lake Dam

Starting mid-September crews will begin crest work on the old dam. This work includes but is not limited to

  • Grinding down tree stumps
  • Removing the old sidewalk in 2,000 foot sections (residents in each section will receive up to two-weeks’ notice prior to sidewalk removal)
  • Relocation of existing electrical boxes on ODNR property to the private property of the respective owner
  • Sheet pile trimming (where applicable)
  • Stone wall removal below finish grade
  • Disposing of any other obstructions on state property
  • Installation of a new sidewalk.

In general, crest work will begin at Sellers Point moving toward Liebs Island. After completion of this first section, crews will begin at North Shore and work toward the AMIL Gate spillway, then toward Sellers Point. It is anticipated that crest clearing and construction of a new sidewalk will be completed in spring/summer of 2018.  Sequencing of this work may change based on the overall needs of the project.

To allow for removal of the old sidewalk and construction of the new sidewalk, portions of the current walkway will be closed to the public from time-to-time. After this construction is complete the fence will be reinstalled to its previous position. The fence will remain in place for the entire construction project.

ODNR has been conducting property boundary surveys to facilitate the second phase of construction. The surveys will enable the installation of a new residential sidewalk along the entire length of the dam. The new sidewalk will be offset from the property boundary by approximately four feet. Survey stakes are being placed to guide construction. Moving, defacing, damaging, destroying, or otherwise improperly tampering with any stakes placed by surveyors is a criminal offense under the Ohio Revised Code 2909.07.

Drainage from homes or sump pumps must be redirected by October 1, 2017.  As stated in the March 3, 2017 letter to residents on the Buckeye Lake dam, ODNR temporarily accommodated approximately 100 water drainage conduits by allowing their discharge over the top of the new embankment stability berm.  After October 1st the project will begin permanently capping unauthorized drainage conduits so that they no longer discharge water through or over the dam.  Drainage conduits for the West Bank Home Owners Association and the Parish farm will not be capped before November 1, 2017.

This schedule was adopted as an interim risk reduction measure to safeguard the public while construction is underway. The project is scheduled to be completed in late 2018, in time to resume normal dam operations for the 2019 recreation season.
