Structural Overview and Construction Process Update

With Phase II construction underway and with activity ramping up, we wanted to give you a quick overview of the Buckeye Lake Dam Rehabilitation Project and next steps. As a reminder, the final design for the Buckeye Lake Dam improvements consists of multiple elements (See illustration below):

  • The soil-mix cutoff wall installed during Phase I reduces seepage through and under the dam embankment;
  • A supporting soil-mix buttress (SMB) to be constructed during Phase II provides strength and rigidity to the cutoff wall;
  • And a landscaped cap on the dam crest, which will include an asphalt access path for use by the public and a concrete sidewalk, approximately 4 feet from the state property line, for local access.

Currently, all constructed elements are performing as designed and the project remains scheduled to be complete in late 2018.

The SMB work is underway using a method similar to that used to construct the soil-mix cutoff wall. This installation, to be completed in three passes, requires that each pass cut into previous work, fusing each element into the single seamless structure necessary to withstand the pressures and forces pushing against the dam.

Soil-mix testing samples will be taken throughout the SMB construction process. To prevent debris falling into the testing drill holes, PVC pipes are inserted into the first couple of feet of each hole and will be seen protruding from the embankment surface. Within a short time after testing is complete, the PVC pipe will be removed.

A second soil-mix trencher is on site and is being assembled. Once this machine is operational and calibrated, it will generally follow the first trencher, working from North Shore toward Liebs Island. To increase efficiency, soil-mix work will be expanded to include some Sundays.
