East Reservoir: Cat Swamp Work Resumes with Drawdown Extension

Posted on 11/15/2019 by Engineering in Portage Lakes

Biennial Fall Drawdown Extension

Lowered lake levels will remain at 15 inches below normal pool until mid-December. The drawdown extension will allow for scheduled Cat Swamp gatehouse maintenance to be completed. ODNR lowered water levels in East, West, Turkeyfoot and North reservoirs, along with the adjoining channels and creeks in Portage Lakes State Park in Summit County, in mid-October. The drawdown is an ODNR standard practice in odd-numbered years and is not related to the upcoming dam construction on North Reservoir. It provides opportunities for community residents along the affected areas to work on seawalls and repair and remove personal property. After mid-December, it will take approximately seven days to return the reservoirs to normal pool. You will be notified when lake levels will be allowed to replenish.

Cat Swamp Work to Resume

Cat Swamp gatehouse maintenance resumes mid-November. Ruhlin Company will lower the Cat Swamp two to three feet, then install stoplogs or beams in the concrete channel, to isolate the Cat Swamp from East Reservoir. Water in the Cat Swamp will be lowered several additional feet to allow modifications to the gatehouse. The work will take three to four weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Bollards to be Installed

Also in mid-November, nautical-inspired bollards (posts) and rope will be installed on portions of Portage Lakes Drive to separate the new embankments along the East Reservoir and the local roadway. Guardrail will be installed on portions of Portage Lakes Drive roadway nearest to the lake once plans are approved by Summit County. This work is expected to take two to three weeks to complete, weather permitting. Though most of the work will be completed off the roadway, you'll see trucks driving to the site. Please watch for flaggers and follow their directions and signs to assure your safety and theirs.
