East Reservoir: Temporary drawdown due to excessive rainfall

Posted on 9/7/2018 by Engineering in Portage Lakes

Due to the long-term forecast indicating as much as six inches of rainfall through Wednesday, Sept. 12, water levels on East Reservoir are being lowered. The temporary lake lowering began late Thursday.

Lowering the reservoir 6 to 12 inches will take approximately 24 hours to complete. Dock owners should expect a shift that will impact getting into and out of boats due to the lower water level. Dock owners in known low-water areas should also expect temporary water level impacts as well.

This safety measure is intended to allow for safe passage of a large influx of storm waters. After the event has moved through, ODNR will begin restoring the lake level if the need is present.

While ODNR’s commitment to minimize the impact of the dam improvement project is unchanged, public safety is the top priority. Understanding that a dam under construction is more vulnerable, ODNR will continue to proactively manage the water levels at Portage Lakes.
