Lake White: More dam improvements needed before lake is refilled

Posted on 9/28/2017 by Engineering in Lake White Dam

Representatives from ODNR, ODOT and engineering consultant Stantec gave a public presentation Sept. 26 at the Pike County Chamber of Commerce in Waverly to update the community on conditions at Lake White.

ODNR shared:

  • The Lake White dam is safe. The lake level will be maintained at or very near winter pool levels to ensure the dam does not pose an unacceptable public safety risk.
  • Additional dam improvements planned include placement of an aggregate filter berm at the toe of the dam in a section where water seepage has formed small boils in a wetland area to prevent development of erosion channels beneath the earthen embankment.
  • The process to place the aggregate filter berm has begun and includes construction design, required permitting from state and federal agencies, and establishing agreements with private property owners in the affected dam improvement area. When project scheduling is determined by ODNR, it will be announced and shared publicly.
  • It will improve its project outreach communications with the Lake White community by forming a stakeholder group to provide input to ODNR and its design consultant as well as to share project information provided by ODNR.
  • Engineering investigations and on-site monitoring will continue in an effort to determine the source of unusual water movement through and under the dam.
