Mt. Gilead Lake: New Earthen Dam Work Now Underway

Posted on 8/24/2017 by Engineering in Mt. Gilead Lake Lower Dam

A unique aspect of the Mt Gilead Lake dam and spillway improvement project is that it includes a complete demolition and rebuild of the Lower Dam and its spillway and a rechanneled lake outflow. Also part of the project includes improvements to the Upper Dam that also are now underway. Much of the concrete work at the new Lower Dam has been completed, except pouring of the labyrinth columns. The stilling basin endsill and spillway baffles have been installed. Workers are returning previously removed soil to form a new earthen embankment that will impound Mt. Gilead Lake once it is allowed to refill. Additional design planning includes adding a hand-powered kayak/canoe public access for the lake. Project completion is scheduled for the end of 2017.

Construction site as of August 22, 2017
