Portage Lakes: East Reservoir, Work Ramping Up at Portage Lakes

Posted on 10/13/2017 by Engineering in Portage Lakes

Stakeholders have probably noticed pre-construction activities on the East Reservoir Dam improvements project recently picking up its pace.

The Ruhlin Company and its subcontractors previously installed fencing to secure construction work areas. They removed trees and other existing landscaping to create a clear work zone for construction crews, and to make way for the major improvements to follow.

Expect work to continue on installing various erosion control measures as part of the project’s Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP).

You’ll also see trucks continue to arrive with equipment to test the current dam soil samples. This work is performed by Nicholson Construction Company, a subcontractor of The Ruhlin Company. The samples will help to identify the right soil-cement mixture for the deep soil mixing. Deep soil mixing is the process of mixing existing soils with cement to build the new dam embankments. Please continue to look for flaggers and follow their directions and signs to assure your safety and theirs.

You will see continued work on the east and south embankments, specifically at 430 Portage Lakes Drive and as the team prepares for the soil cement demonstration area. ODNR advises that the former Kieffer Marine property, recently acquired by the State of Ohio, is a closed area and not open for public access.

We will provide regular updates to let stakeholders know what to expect during construction.
